I used to have a ten-step skincare routine. Cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, face oil, sleeping mask — you name it, I owned it. My bathroom shelf looked like a mini Sephora, and I genuinely believed more products meant better skin. Turns out, I was making everything worse.
It started with random breakouts along my jawline that would not go away. I kept adding products to “fix” the problem, not realizing I was the one causing it. When I finally stripped everything back to basics, my skin did a complete one-eighty in about three weeks. Here is what I cut, what I kept, and why less really is more.
The Exfoliating Toner I Used Every Single Day
This was probably my biggest mistake. I was using a chemical exfoliant with glycolic acid every morning and night because I thought my skin needed constant turnover to stay clear. What actually happened was that I destroyed my moisture barrier. My face felt tight and shiny even after moisturizer, and I started getting these tiny bumps that were not quite acne but definitely not smooth skin either.
Now I exfoliate twice a week, max. On those nights I skip everything else except a simple moisturizer after. My skin texture improved within ten days of making this change. The bumps disappeared, and that weird tight feeling went away completely.
The Vitamin C Serum That Was Doing Nothing
I spent a ridiculous amount on a vitamin C serum that smelled like hot dog water. Every morning I would pat it on, convinced it was brightening my complexion. After four months of consistent use, I looked at before and after photos and could not tell a single difference. Not one.
The problem was twofold. First, the concentration was too low to actually do anything meaningful. Second, vitamin C is notoriously unstable, and mine had probably oxidized within the first month. I was basically applying expensive orange liquid to my face for no reason. I replaced it with a niacinamide serum that costs a third of the price and actually made a visible difference in my pore appearance within two weeks.
The Double Cleanse I Did Not Need
Oil cleansing followed by a foam cleanser sounds luxurious and thorough. For someone who wears heavy makeup every day, it might even make sense. But I work from home most days and barely wear tinted sunscreen. I was double cleansing my already clean face every night, stripping away natural oils my skin was desperately trying to produce.
Now I use a gentle cream cleanser in the evening and just splash water on my face in the morning. My skin stopped overproducing oil within the first week. Those midday shine problems I was blaming on my moisturizer? Gone. It was the cleanser all along.
The Sheet Masks That Were Mostly Just Wet Paper
I had a whole drawer of sheet masks. Korean brands, Japanese brands, fancy ones from Sephora. I would use one almost every night and feel like I was doing something special for my skin. The reality is that most sheet masks are soaked in water, glycerin, and a tiny amount of active ingredients. They feel nice, but they are not really doing much that a good moisturizer cannot do.
I stopped buying them entirely and put that money toward a really good moisturizer instead. One jar lasts three months and does more for my hydration than a hundred sheet masks ever did.
What My Routine Looks Like Now
Morning: splash of water, niacinamide serum, moisturizer with SPF. Evening: cream cleanser, retinol three nights a week, plain moisturizer on the other nights. That is it. Four products total instead of the ten-plus I used to have.
My skin is clearer, calmer, and way less reactive than it was six months ago. I spend less money, spend less time in front of the mirror, and actually like what I see now. If your skincare routine feels like a chore and your skin is not improving, try cutting things out instead of adding more. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your face is leave it alone.
